Combustion

The project Combustion covers all topics that are directly connected to the actual combustion of hydrogen. That is, roughly speaking, anything that occurs between the intake and exhaust port. All major advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen combustion engines have its seeds there. The effects can be quantified in terms of efficiency, NOx formation, power and the occurrence of anomalies. The levers to influence the combustion are the charge motion, the mixture formation, the ignition, the gas exchange strategy, the process itself, the charge composition, the compression ratio, and others.
The occurrence of combustion anomalies is of greatest concern in this project, as it limits the performance of the hydrogen engine in many aspects. Any of the participating components and subsystems can contribute to combustion anomalies. We expect the ignition, the gas exchange and the introduction of lubricant to play a particular important role.
