Engine
The project Engine covers research that is focussed on the engine itself and is mostly independent of the vehicle and the exact later operation of the engine. There are certain topics that can be detached from this larger scope, and it is therefore reasonable to define an individual project.
Most of the topics of Engine are related to the degradation of the engine and its components: The desired performance has to be sufficiently fulfilled during its entire lifetime. Any degradation has to be anticipated and allowed for in the development of the engine. Again, we expect the hydrogen engine to be far more sensitive to degradation than diesel or gas engines. Worn diesel engines are usually only affected by increased oil consumption or deteriorated emission behaviour. Worn hydrogen engines might be affected by combustion anomalies in contrast. Anomalies can destroy the engine in short time. The thorough investigation into the robustness of the hydrogen engine is one of the core topics of Hylley. The most impolrtant topics in this respect are the injectors, the spark plugs and the ignition system, lubrication and crank case ventialtion.
